Check back for updates about what we are learning in class right now!

Math: After the first few weeks of school we are in full swing with our math curriculum. We just finished chapter one where we learned about exponents, order of operations, patterns, and estimating whole numbers. We engaged in some fun activities such as going outside and doing PEMDAS hopscotch and we got to create some art to learn the distributive property. Students just took their chapter 1 test and we will begin chapter two after the Labor Day weekend.
Reading: we are using the Storytown curriculum for our reading. Each week we have a focus skill and vocabulary that we work on as a class, and students also have independent work to increase their reading knowledge. In sixth grade we work to develop comprehension and a deeper understanding of reading through connections, questioning, and creating small and large projects based on books. Currently we are working on story mountains, plot parts, and setting of a story. Students have created pictures, story mountains, and story boards of the stories we have read in class.
Read aloud: for our red aloud we are reading the book "the tale of Desperaux" by Kate Dicamillo. We read this aloud together every day and then create group discussions about it. We have done a handful of projects with book so far including "web activity" , character trait picture, journaling, letter to Desperaux and more!
Writing: I absolutely LOVE teaching writing! The students can tell you that writing in sixth grade is different than other years past. I use the idea of mentor texts, or picture books, to help teach a certain writing skill. Students then use this to base their writing assignment. Many of our assignments are longer and take a few days or weeks to complete. Right now students are working on their own "SOS" stories about a time they got hurt. They created a story mountain with sticky notes to add detail in, and are now working on their rough drafts. They will then bring these to final publishing and will bring home to share with you!
